Before this feature, it was difficult for Android and iOS users to migrate their chat history between different devices.WhatsApp’s beta program has finally reached a wide rollout across iOS and now allows all users on the latest version of WhatsApp to access the multi-device option. Users must be running WhatsApp iOS version 2.21.160.17 or greater on their old device and WhatsApp Android version 2.21.16.20 or greater on the new device. This process will require a USB-C to Lightning cable, Samsung SmartSwitch app version 3.7.22.1 or greater on the new device. When you set up a new device, you’ll be provided with the option to securely transfer your chats from your old device to your new one. It will not include peer to peer payment messages and call history. In terms of what data can be migrated, the company says that it will include voice messages, photos and videos. As of now, WhatsApp supports Samsung-branded Android devices running Android 10 or higher to transfer chat from iOS device. It will be made available to beta users in a future update and will have a wider roll out later. The feature, as per the report, is currently under development. It explains that the Move to iOS app will be needed to migrate your chat history from Android to iOS.
The report also shares a screenshot which shows that WhatsApp will ask for user’s permission to import the chat history before starting the process. WhatsApp features tracker WaBetaInfo has spotted the feature on the WhatsApp beta for Android 2.21.20.11. The company has already rolled out the feature to migrate chat history from iOS to Samsung and Pixel phones last year. Meta-owned messaging platform WhatsApp is reportedly testing the ability to import chat from Android to iOS running phones.
